When Should You Start Hypnobirthing? A Complete Guide for Expectant Parents

If you’ve recently discovered hypnobirthing, you might be wondering…

“Have I left it too late?”

The short answer is probably not!

One of the questions I’m asked most often is when the best time is to start hypnobirthing. The truth is that there’s no single “perfect” week to begin—but there are definitely times that allow you to get the most from your preparation.

The ideal time to start hypnobirthing

I usually recommend starting between 20 and 35 weeks of pregnancy.

By this stage, many parents are beginning to think more seriously about birth, but there’s still plenty of time to learn, practise and build confidence before labour begins.

Starting during this window means you can:

  • Learn how your body works during labour.

  • Understand what to expect as birth unfolds.

  • Practise relaxation and breathing techniques until they feel natural.

  • Help your birth partner feel confident in supporting you.

  • Feel more informed when making decisions about your care.

Rather than trying to remember everything at the last minute, you’ll have time to build your confidence gradually.

What if I’m already over 35 weeks?

Please don’t panic!

I regularly meet parents who tell me they wish they’d found hypnobirthing sooner.

The good news is that it’s never too late to benefit.

Even if your due date is just around the corner, learning how birth works, understanding your options and practising simple relaxation techniques can make a real difference to how prepared you feel.

I also offer an intensive course designed for families who are further along in pregnancy and want focused birth preparation in a shorter amount of time.

Isn’t hypnobirthing just breathing exercises?

This is one of the biggest myths about hypnobirthing.

Yes, you’ll learn breathing and relaxation techniques—but you’ll also discover:

  • What happens physically during labour.

  • How your hormones support birth.

  • Ways to reduce fear and build confidence.

  • Your choices if birth doesn’t go exactly as planned.

  • How your birth partner can support you throughout labour.

  • Practical tools you can use wherever you choose to give birth.

Hypnobirthing isn’t about having a “perfect” birth. It’s about helping you feel informed, calm and prepared, whatever your birth journey looks like.

Every birth deserves positive preparation

Whether you’re planning a home birth, a hospital birth, an induction or a caesarean birth, preparing for birth is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.

Birth can be unpredictable, but feeling informed and supported can make a huge difference to how you experience it.
